Teammates in Young Adult Literature

Welcome to Teammates - Thematic Bibliography! The purpose of this blog is to provide a brief overview of literature that young adults might enjoy that all share the same theme: teammates. So far, most of the novels listed are directly related to sports but there are many other types of teams. Be sure to comment on this post with any recommendations you may have of any good books about what it's like to be part of a team. This could mean an academic team, a drama cast and crew or even a family working together to get food on the table. Teams, teammates and teamwork are an important part of growing up, whether you're the star quarterback at your high school or your life has been made miserable by the star quarterback and his football friends.

Love the idea of students reading about teammates - either fiction or nonfiction. I look forward to browsing through the titles on your blog!

I see you already have Whale Talk but you could also add other titles by Chris Crutcher.

Also, if you're thinking about adding picture books, the Barber twins have some wonderful books for kids that would be perfect.

I don't know how literally the books need to be about teamwork, but it seems to me that is a major aspect of many books beyond just sports books (which personally I don't think I've ever read).

Take things like Harry Potter or Narnia, for example - in the latter the four kings and queens rule Narnia together, and in the former Harry certainly couldn't have done it without Ron and Hermione. All of Enid Blyton's classic books are about teams like the Famous Five and the Secret Seven, too. A lot of kids' mystery and crime books have a team of main characters who solve the puzzles together, each bringing different strengths into the group... But these are generally not "teams" according to more rigorous definitions, but more like groups of friends working together towards a shared goal.

Great project! :)

Thanks for all the support and suggestions! I hope to come back and add more titles from authors already listed as well as some other I hadn't had time for yet, BookCorner12. I hadn't thought of the Barber twins but I should have. I work where they went to high school!

And I would absolutely consider stories like Harry Potter and Narnia "teammate" stories, Tuuli. Teams, friends and family are all closely related in my book. It's one reason I love both sports and Harry Potter ;)
